Branding Project, Developed

Original photos

I have been looking into my photos and how I can layer up the texture. I have started layering rubbing's of textures using tracing paper and found that this is working well, so then went on photoshop and started layering up my photos on here, lowering the opacity so that the textures overlap and make more patterns, and also changing the colour of my photos in accordance with my colour pallet.

I think that I may be in a position to knit now as I have defined my colour pallet and have multiple images to work from. I feel that when I start knitting I will start to realise and find new techniques and qualities to put into my knit samples.

I think that actually knitting different sections of knit, and linking them together at the top will be the best way to present my knits, this will be best as Marni's collection is all about layering clothes not being able to see when the garment begins and ends.

Self Initiated, Developed

With the paintings I have produced I really like all the colours and dark marks, I find that I need to exaggerate the marks so that I can translate them into knit techniques. And also refine my colour pallet.

I want my knits to have a lot of layers as within my paintings, layering of marks is very clear. Also I think that building up techniques will portray chaos, rather than my knits being flat. I feel that I need to do some drawings more simple to show some more basic shapes that I can make on the machine. Also establish what marks I want to layer on and how, this will require testing out different ways on adding texture and detail. I will try out embroidery, beading and foiling.

Refined colour pallet

This week I have tried to refine my colour pallet, so it has not got every shade of every colour. but has a selected choice from my imagery.

Self Initiated, Floral Chaos

Continuing this week with working in a more abstract way, carrying on with oil pastels, watercolours and acrylic. I am finding that my work is still looking very literally like flowers, though this is not a bad thing I do not want my knits to be prints of flowers. So have decided to look more into my paintings finding what it is within them that I like most, and found that is is the expressive mark and dark bold colours against the colours. So Zoomed into a few of my paintings and this I found shows more expression and more obvious marks, which I could translate into knit.

Below again is another imaged of a zoomed in section of my work. I really like the bold marks and think this will be a key feature within my work and has also been something that appeared in my previous project. I think that all the marks layered up is very interesting so maybe this would be good when translating into knit, that there is a lot layers to my knits, building up different techniques.

Locating, Branding Project

Original Imagery
For the Branding project I will be focusing of creating a collection of samples aimed suitable for Marni. Marni collections often have a lot of layers and multiple colours from the same pallet.  I will be starting of the unit looking at the order in the city. Looking at the patterns and grid like structures in everyday lives.

Acrylic painting of road

I had started to paint directly from my imagery, but found this was not working well and wasn't enthusing me. I then started to collect rubbing's of textures from the photos I was taking like brick on walls and gravel. With these Rubbing I then started to layer then up on top of each other to resemble the photos I had taken but with texture.

Locating, Self initiated

Original photos, Capturing chaos
For my self initiated project my concept will be Chaos, this concept will allow me to explore my starting point with a different approach. Making my work look very experimental and expressive.
The starting point for collecting visual research will be flowers. This I find will be best as it will allow for a lot of colour. I will take this unit into a very abstract style as this is what I most enjoy.

Start of unit paintings
These are a few images of how I have started to interpret my imagery. Painting in a way that is not very literal. This allows me to focus more on colour and marks. The image above I feel is too toned down and is not capturing chaos very well. The image below I find is capturing chaos more, due to the bold linear qualities, and bright colours. I find that working in this more abstract way is what I enjoy most, so will push this more forward.

End of Unit Evaluation

Starting Point Photo

Looking back over the unit of 'Intentions', I feel like I have really developed my practice, specialising in knit. I have found it overall very exciting. I have really enjoyed my starting point using mostly Acrylic and watercolours to capture the beautiful landscapes of my holidays over the summer. And then using my knowledge on the domestic knitting machines and new learnt techniques on the Dubied to translate these into knit. Working with the context I chose allowed me to be very experimental, and really push myself to doing things I had never done before, this involved working in a more sculptural/ three dimensional way.

Development Photo

Development into Drawing

Knit I feel worked very well for my context of sculptural fashion as it allowed me to successfully produced detailed textured samples, that I can envisage as a fashion garment. The way I captured condense ripples with blocks of bold colours I feel is very striking and could be on the runway. I feel that I had planned out my samples well when it came to refining my ideas, this meant that I used my time efficiently.

Final Sample

I have found that during the unit, learning the new techniques on the dubied is what has worked most successfully. I feel that I have picked it up very easily and quickly and am kean to learn more and get much better on them.  I also have discovered that I have found it a little easier to translate my drawing into knit this unit, though am still not a completely confident, I have myself felt an improvement. For example, in my knit samples I have focused my work on the theme of capturing movement, so my drawings turned more abstract  than literally drawing what I saw. This then helped me to think of ways that I can move these drawings into knit. As they were more about a quality than an object. I then started to play around with form, using materials like bin liner, so that I could see exactly the shape and textured that I wanted to achieve on the machines.

Final Sample

There has been many hurdles during these few weeks which I have had to overcome, something that I found did not work so well is my context. Though During the unit I have done a lot of research.  My research has been towards installations. As the unit has unravelled it seems that my knit samples have not developed enough in the direction of creating something suitable for a space, though if I had more time this may be more visible, but as the unit did not last too long, it was not so clear. So this forced me to look more into fashion as a context, and feel that this works very well. My knit samples are very three dimensional and textured which I feel fits well in the fashion world, as a catwalk garment.

If I had time to continue with this project, I would love to see it go larger, and see how the linear marks within my work really become movements. and I would like to experiment more with manipulating the shape of the knit. causing more three dimensional shape.

Final Week

Painting from Visual Research

During the final week it is really about bringing my samples together to make them look like a complete collection. This involved me looking at they all as a group, making sure nothing was missing, the colour balance was correct, that there was not too much of one colour or too little of another.

Final Samples with Foil

During the beginning of this unit I had used tin foil to capture the shimmer in water  synthetically. This I had moved into foiling, but had not really pushed it, though in these last few weeks had experimented with it on my knit samples, and found that it does in fact work very well and that this brings back that shimmer I was capturing at the beginning, and that was a main focus.
