Connections between Embroidery and Drawing

When asked to create an embroidered sample based on one of my drawing, I picked this drawing piece as it had a lot going on within it, lots of linear marks and neutral colours which I thought worked well together. I recreated this on fabric using the free motion footer on the sewing machine to create circular marks that occur frequently in the drawing. I also bondawebbed circular shapes onto the fabric to add the blocks of colour, all neutral shades like the paint on the drawing. I also added subtle hand embroidery. I feel that I now make the link between embroidery and drawing more then I have done in the past, thinking about mark making and colour within my work both on paper and fabric.

Critical review of time so far within Origins unit

During my time on the origins unit so far I have thoroughly enjoyed learning new techniques within embroidery, such as being inducted on the machines. I feel as though my knowledge of textiles embroidery both machine and hand have grown, through practicing new stitches and creating samples with the methods to make sure that I really understand how to achieve them. I feel that my skill of hand embroidery has grown massively, in that I now find it easier and a lot quicker to achieve what it is I want to achieve, taking into consideration the materials used i.e the choice of fabric and threads and what effects they will have on my work.

During the embroidery sessions we have been pushed to think about the relationship between embroidery and drawing, I feel I understand and can make the link more now between these two than I could before, by practicing and thinking about my work and what I am doing. During the drawing days in which we have mostly been thinking about this we have been doing some blind drawings along with many other things, but the blind drawings in particularly caught my interest, I really enjoyed this technique as the drawings looked very free and unusual. We then went on to making this into a sample, thinking about the drawing and embroidery as one. Knowing everything the machines did and different hand stitches helped me create a sample appropriate and interesting.

My engagement with embroidery was a good experience. Embroidery was my first area of practice to be placed in, next is construct, I found that it was very enjoyable and a relaxed way of working even though we had work to complete out of class. I am managing my time very well and  am finding this a lovely working environment and feel I am settling in  to the routine well.
