PE Task 2

Overall I have thoroughly Enjoyed the Sampling unit, I have enjoyed experimenting with new techniques and ideas.I feel that during the sampling unit that the context of my work has been more visible and the artists I have looked at have helped me work in a more professional way, provoking new ideas.

Anne Kyyro Quinn

During Mixed Media I was focusing on natural things like flowers which I collected images of from the Manchester Museum during feedback week. During these three weeks I wanted to achieve something that was not too three-dimensional but had relief. Artist Anne Kyyro Quinn inspired me along with Artist Giles Miller as there work is very neural colours and there work seems to be mostly made up from the same pattern/ shape but repeated. I wanted to capture this within my own work and feel that this has worked because from one single image of a daisy I have created something that can repeat. I thought that working with the laser cutter was very time consuming and had problems with that my design was to detailed and became very fragile when cut out.

Kim Parker

During my time in print I was again focusing on flowers, but in a a completely different way. I really enjoyed print, more than I thought I would, I learnt a lot of new techniques I did not know about and feel it has a lot of potential, like working into the prints afterwords with other areas of textiles for example embroidery. During this rotation I was working with my prints in mind to be for interior. I was particularly looking at artist Kim Parker as I liked the composition of her work, it is very spaced out motifs, I really liked this and can see the link between this and my own prints. During print I did not have many problems, I managed to get the hand of the process well though found it tricky when mixing my colours. Some of the colours I mixed did not show up in my fabric very clear and others were too bold, so this is something I would need to be aware of next time.

For the last week of Sampling we where able to choose what area to go back into, I chose Knit and have really enjoyed it. I took a different direction for this as I felt I had out done the flowers and needed something new to work with. I focused on 'Street Beat' and with my photos I have been making block colours with intarsia mostly, on the domestic machines. I have been working with the idea for my work to be wall hangings on a larger scale, but have taken influence from designer Hannah Buswell who's fashion pieces are very bold, using very bright colours. One thing during this three weeks that I have found tricky is using thinner yarns, I wanted to create a look of translucency but due to not being able to manage the thin yarns or even thin wires I could not get the desired effect.

Last 3 Weeks In Knit, Week 3

During this last week of knit iI am realising what Direction my work is going in and finalising my samples. During this week I have booked onto the knit machines to work mostly work with Intarsia and e-wrapping, being very concious of the yarns I am working with and paying close attention to colour.

The artists and designers I have looked at during this unit in particular have really helped me move my ideas forward, recently looking into designer Yann Gerstberger, has made me realise that I do not want my work to be fashion based, I rather the work be an art piece on its own as a wall display, and feel the large scale work is very eyes catching, so during this week I am going to see what my sample may look like on a slightly bigger scale. 

Last 3 Weeks In Knit, Week 2

I have really enjoyed the second week of this unit in knit, I feel like my ideas are coming together now and can see that within my work. The artists I have been looking at, such as Brenda Aherne & Helen Delany and Hannah Busewell, have been a big inspiration to take my work in a more abstract direction, however I feel this really fits with my photos as they look very abstract in themselves, Using a low shutter speed on my camera to capture the light.

This week we was tough how to create vertical lines on the knitting machines, I feel that that this technique is very useful to my work and will help me move ideas forward. As using this technique I can achieve the abstract bold shapes within my photos.

Last 3 Weeks In Knit, Week 1

During this week I have been moved into knit, my first to choice to spend the last three weeks of the Sampling unit. During this week I have chosen 'Street Beat' as my starting point to collect data. Taking photos from the street to capture light and atmosphere. Then Drawing from these but not in a literal way, taking the colour out of the image and using this to create the image.

Though I do not normally work in a fashion directed way I feel these designers work are more art than clothes, and feel my work could lead towards this style of work, with the bold colours and solid shapes.

Print Week 3

Group Feedback Notes

During this week we had more time to practice the skills learnt in print so far, and develop them further. A new technique learnt was Heatfix paper. This is a good method to use as I felt it forced me to build up layers in my prints, as it acted as a base of colour. For my prints I did not want to make them to busy, thinking about them as interior designs, also my colour palette mood. I did not want to clutter the prints with colour and make them look chaos.

During peer reviews, it was said that my prints and the colour mood was calming, which is something I think is fitting with my context, if it was not calming it would not be suitable.

I feel these two artists prints link well to my style of work. As they are quite spaced out and not too complex of a design. Though still quite stunning.

Print Week 2

First Print Samples 

During the second week on Print we was introduced to the print room. Using our motifs we printed them onto acetate and was able to get them exposed onto the screens. I am really enjoying the Print rotation I feel as though I am learning a lot, in both the Digital lessons and Practical lessons. I am enjoying the technique. Below is a photo of Kim Parker's Design this is how I would like to see my prints, as interior design ideas like Bed covers, Pillows etc. The print of Kim Parker's is similar to mine also as the motifs are all spaced out separately and not touching.

Print Week 1

During the First week of Print we have been generating motifs from our drawings from feedback week. During feedback week I focused on natural objects like flowers and shells. This week I focussed on just flowers alone. We were to use black media only and try creating linear and silhouette shapes from our imagery. This was fairly easy to do so after a while got quite boring. Later on in the week though we were introduced to a different technique on illustrator which I enjoyed because this enabled me to transform the motifs I already had and manipulate them and play around with patterns etc. My favourite part of the week was the colour task. I really enjoyed focusing on the colour and really pulling out colours that are not so noticeable at a first glance, I found this task very relaxing and therapeutic.
